Glenteenassig Wood

Location: Glenteenassig Wood is located about 26.5 km west of Tralee on the Castlegregory road, turn left for 4.5 km at Aughacusla. It can be found on discovery map number, 71, grid reference Q 606 122.

Facilities: There is a picnic site, fishing, forest and lakeside walks and scenic views available at Glenteenassig Wood.

Habitat: The Owencusla River rises at Lough Caum and flows through this delightful glen which cradles three lakes.

Main Tree Species: Mainly Sitka spruce with lodgepole pine and a sprinkling of Japanese larch. Groups of rowan are intermingled throughout and birch also enhances the scenery.

Other Flora: Bracken, furze and heather.

Fauna: Foxes and badgers frequent the woods, as do many species of birds. Wild goats are sometimes seen on the cliffs.

History: Gleann Tí an Eassaigh means the 'Glen of the Waterfall' and indeed, up to three waterfalls are visible at times.

Geology: The surrounding hills are composed of old red sandstone.
